Hajj – The Pilgrimage

There are a number of important rites, to be performed during the
Hajj
1.
Niyyah:
The pilgrim expresses the intention of performing
Hajj
.
2.
Ihram:
After cleaning himself, the pilgrim puts on the special
dress called
Ihram,
a white seamless garment, by wearing which he
enters the state of
Ihram
.
3.
Talbiya:
After putting on
Ihram
the pilgrim recites the
talbiya:
“I
stand up for your service O God! I stand up! I stand up! There is
no partner with You! I stand up! Truly Yours is the Praise, the
Blessing and the Sovereignty. There is no partner with You.”
The
talbiya
continues until the throwing of stones.
4.
Tawaf:
going round the Ka‘bah seven times. Seven times at
arrival in Makkah and seven times on the 10th
Dhul Hijjah,
after
sacrificing an animal.
5.
Saee:
the pilgrim undertakes a fast walk between Safa and
Marwah, two hillocks near the Ka‘bah.
There are a number of other rites to be performed during the Hajj:
— Standing on Arafat: The pilgrims gather in Arafat and pray to
God throughout the day, reciting the
talbiyya.
This standing on
the 9th day of
Dhul Hijjah
is very important According to a
tradition, standing on Arafat is the culmination of the
pilgrimage. The pilgrims leave Arafat after sunset:
